Utilities guide
What utilities does a new office need?
Most offices need electricity, internet and phone readiness at a minimum. Depending on the premises, you may also need gas, water account details, meter access, building management approvals and old-office account closure.
Start with the premises
The utility list depends on the address, building type, lease arrangement and how your business will use the space. Before comparing offers, gather the address, move-in date, access date, meter details if available, landlord or building manager contacts and any known embedded network or building-specific rules.
Common utilities and connected services
Electricity
Needed for fitout work, cleaning, IT testing, lighting, air conditioning, kitchens, devices and daily operations.
Gas
Relevant if the premises uses gas for cooking, heating, hot water or specific business equipment.
Water
Usually tied to the property, but account responsibilities, billing and trade waste considerations should be checked for the premises.
Internet and phones
Not a traditional utility, but usually critical for staff readiness, customer calls, cloud tools and payment or booking systems.
Old office closure
Plan final reads, account closure, redirects, equipment returns and overlap periods so you do not disconnect too early.
Move-day fallback
Consider temporary connectivity or contingency plans if a connection or service activation is delayed.
What to compare
Energy.gov.au provides business energy management guidance and links to Energy Made Easy, an Australian Government energy comparison website. For office moves, comparison is not only about price. It can also include contract terms, supply timing, billing structure, support and how well the provider can work with the move timeline.
Need utility setup included in the broader move?
